OVERVIEW OF LA JOLLA, CA

La Jolla’s History at a Glance

  • The Kumeyaay Native Americans referred to La Jolla as “mat kilaaxuuy,” which means “land of holes,” likely referring to the holes that formed the sea-level caves on the north-facing bluffs.
  • La Jolla was designated as pueblo land during San Diego’s Mexican Period. It was incorporated as part of the City of San Diego in 1850 when California became a state.
  • In 1870, Charles Dean received several pueblo lots from city trustees. He subdivided these lots into an area that would later on become La Jolla Park. Although Dean was unsuccessful in developing the land, a real estate boom in the 1880s created an opportunity for speculators Frank T. Botsford and George W. Heald to develop the area.

A dance pavilion, bathhouse, summer tent city, and bungalows and cottages overlooking La Jolla Cove attracted more visitors to the area each year.
  • From about 350 residents in 1900, La Jolla’s population grew rapidly in the decades that followed. Tourism became the primary economic driver for the area from 1900 to 1920.
